Romanian Climber Dies at Camp III, Kenyan Climber Missing Above 8,000m

A Romanian climber died at Camp III on Mt Everest, and a Kenyan climber and his Sherpa guide went missing above 8,000 meters according to expedition organizers. Gabriel Tabara a 48 year old Romanian was found dead in his tent at Camp III. He was attempting to climb Lhotse without using supplemental oxygen. Tabara had previously climbed Manaslu in 2021 said Mohan Lamsal Managing Director at Makalu Adventure.

On Mt. Everest, a Kenyan climber and his Sherpa guide went missing this morning above 8,000 meters. The Kenyan climber, Cheruiyot Kirui, was last in contact near the summit.

According to Mingma Sherpa, Chairman of Seven Summit Treks, Cheruiyot Kirui, who was attempting to climb Everest without supplemental oxygen, went missing at Bishop Rock, a few meters below the summit. Kirui, a banker with KCB, and his Sherpa guide Nawang were last in contact at that point. Nawang mentioned that Kirui had been behaving oddly before they lost contact. In response, two Sherpa rescuers have been dispatched to search for them.

“They have reached the area above the balcony,” he added.

Earlier, two climbers went missing near the Hillary Step on Mt. Everest. According to a source at base camp, Daniel Paul Peterson from the UK and Pas Tenji Sherpa from Makalu fell when a section of the route collapsed just below the summit. The search for these missing climbers is ongoing.

Additionally, on May 13, two Mongolian climbers, Usukhjargal Tsedendamba and Prevsuren Lkhagvajav, died while descending from an altitude above 8,500 meters.
